In making prints we use Azo paper.Grade F, which is a white glossy paper. We use three different contrasts—the Soft, the Hard, and the Hard X; the Soft forharsh eontrasty negatives; the Hard formedium negatives, and the Hard X for thinnegatives lacking in contrast. Many printssubmitted to us by beekeepers are unsuit-able for half-tone reproduction. In suchcases, if the picture seems to warrant wesend for the negative, and in almost everyinstance we find that, by using the properpaper, a much better result can be secured. If the negative is all that it should be, theSoft paper will produce the best results;but many negatives are so lacking in con-trast that a harder paper is necessary in]irinting. Even when the photograph is clear anddistinct, the half-tone reproduction may notbe all that is desired. produced, but the secreting vesselsfor this purpose have hitherto escaped the researches of the acutestnaturalists. Huber, however, plausibly enough conjectures that theyare contained in the internal lining of the wax pockets, which consistof a cellular substance reticulated with hexagons. The wax pocketsthemselves which are concealed by the over-lapping of the rings, maybe seen by pressing the abdomen of a worker-bee so as to lengthen it,and separate the rings further from each other. When this lias beendone, there may be seen on each of the four intermediate hoops of thebelly, and separated by what may be called the keel (carina) two whi-tish-colored pouches, of a soft texture and in the form of atrapizium.Within, the little scales or plates of wax are produced as occasion re-quires. We may remark that it is chiefly the wax-workers which pro-duce the wax, for though the nurse-bees are furnished with wax pock-ets, they Becrete it only in very small quantities, while in the queen bee

It may be sup-posed that if the substance found lying under the rings be really theelements of wax, it undergoes some subsequent preparation after it isdetached ; and that the bees, in short, are capable of impregnating itwith matter, imparting to it whiteness and ductility, whereas in its un-prepared state it is only fusible.* Propolis. Wax is not the only material employed by bees in theirarchitecture. Besides this, they make use of a brown, oderiferous, resinous substance called propolis, more tenacious and extensible thanwax, and well adapted for cementing and varnishing. This it appearsfrom satisfactory experiments made by Huber and others, is obtainedfrom the wild poplar and probably from other trees. The use of thisappears to be to fill up such interstices as may happen to exist in thecell, and to serve as a varnish for any place which may require it.But this is not the only use to which bees apply the
